What is AUTO C-ITS?
-
The objective of AUTO C-ITS is to contribute to the deployment of cooperative services in Europe by improving the interoperability of autonomous driving, and to promote the role of cooperative services (C-ITS) as a catalyst for the autonomous driving implementation. To do this, three pilots have been developed in three major European cities located in the Atlantic Corridor: Madrid, Paris and Lisbon.

The French pilot has been deployed on the A13-Highway, which belongs to the French part of the Atlantic Corridor, considered one of the central veins of Paris city. The selected highway segment is near Paris (Technical site No. 11, located at PR 72 of the A13 motorway between exchangers No. 16 (PR 71) and No. 17 (PR 82). The deploying of the C-ITS services have allowed the control centre send incidents or events to both connected and autonomous vehicles to enhance the information received from the infrastructure. INRIA, with the collaboration of SANEF, are the main participants in this pilot.

The Lisbon pilot has taken place in the A9-CREL motorway and in the Cruise terminal (urban-node), involving different type of vehicles at each scenario: autonomous and connected vehicles running at the motorway; and autonomous shuttle running on a dedicated road connecting the Cruise terminal and Santa Apolónia station. The implemented services allow sharing incidents or events to be shared with connected and autonomous vehicles and shuttles.
The applications of use “Driving Assistance - Road Hazard Warning” that have been developed in Lisbon are the following
- Slow or stationary vehicle & Traffic ahead warning
- Weather Condition
- Hazardous Location
The objective of these services is to improve mobility and road safety by sending warnings of different road conditions. UC, IPN and ANSR participate in the Lisbon pilot with support of BRISA, A-to-Be, CTAG and Bosch.

The Madrid pilot has been deployed in the High-Occupancy-Vehicles (HOV) Lane located in the A6 between km 7 and km 17 between the M-40 and M30 roads (Madrid Urban Node). The pilot has deployed three Day 1 C-ITS services, in which connected and automated vehicles perform safety maneuvers (change of lane, reduction of the speed, etc.) based on the information received from the Road Authority through a C-ITS infrastructure.
The three C-ITS services allow vehicles to be notified in real time about incidents that these vehicle will find in their path. Thanks to this information, vehicles can perform a safer driving since their reaction time will be increased.
The CITS-Services that have been deployed in Madrid are within the applications known “as Driving Assistance - Road Hazard Warning” which are a subset of the “Active Road Safety” applications.
The selected use cases of the application “Driving Assistance - Road Hazard Warning” that will be deployed in Madrid are:
- Road Works
- Weather Condition
- Hazardous
Location INDRA, the DGT (National Road Authority) and UPM participate in the Spanish Pilot.
